Several of our 5th and 6th grade band and choir students represented Taylorville JH at two different festivals recently. In February, 6th grade choir students were selected for the festival, and the 5th and 6th grade band members had their turn in March. Students travelled to Eastern Illinois University to work with guest conductors and other elementary/junior high musicians from the area.

Our 6th grade band participated in the US Marine Band’s March Mania! 32 marches iPhone head to head- and our students voted each day, ultimately choosing their favorite to win the whole thing! We had one student predict the winner! Seth correctly predicted that The Marine’s Hymn March would come out on top! The rest of us had our brackets BUSTED! Check out the website to learn more. https://www.marineband.marines.mil/Educational/Sousas-March-Mania/

¡Hola from Mexico! Miss Sharrow’s 5th grade class took an unforgettable virtual field trip to Mexico this week—no suitcase required! Students kicked off the adventure by grabbing their passports and boarding passes at the classroom “airport.” After a smooth “flight,” they landed in a beautifully decorated Mexican destination filled with color, culture, and excitement! Throughout the day, students: • Tasted some delicious new foods • Learned the history behind Mexico’s vibrant flag • Discovered traditions like Los Charros, maracas, and sombreros • Decorated their own maracas • Played a lively game of Lotería (Mexico’s version of bingo!) • Looked at real Mexican pesos up close • And even practiced Spanish greetings, numbers, and colors! It was a day full of learning, laughter, and cultural exploration—¡Viva México!

Taylorville CUSD #3 was proudly represented at the Rochester STEM Fair by two amazing student helpers—Cora from Memorial and Eliza from North! These young STEM ambassadors stayed the entire event, showing students and families how to code with Sphero Indi robots and explore creativity with LEGO Education Essential Kits. Their confidence and kindness shone through as they explained how the tools worked, even impressing the WAND and TOMMY TV crews during their interviews! A special thank you to the Taylorville Public Schools Foundation for funding the Sphero Indis and to ROE #3 for lending the LEGO kits. We also had a surprise guest, Addie, who stopped by to lend a hand. We couldn’t be prouder of how our students represented our district!

As a part of learning about the JFK assassination, students analyzed real newspapers published in the aftermath of the events of November 22, 1963. While handling with care, students viewed and evaluated newspapers from local papers such as the Breeze-Courier to national papers to better understand how those in 1963 would have read to discover more information about the tragic events (and also noting how much prices have changed). They finished their analysis by having to write their own, unbiased article about the events as if they were a journalist in 1963. A small glimpse of some of the artifacts used this year to learn American History!

STEM sudents made models of DNA molecules out of licorice and colored marshmallows in Mrs. Wagner's class. Each marshmallow represented a specific nitrogen base. The students then had to add the appropriate marshmallows to complete the base pairs. Once finished the models were able to replicate the twisted ladder structure of DNA. Their models were also edible which added to the fun!
