The week ok March 3-7 is Special Olympics Respect Week for Unified Champion Schools in Illinois. This week the Unified Tornadoes had a dress up week. Each day of the week is associated with a color and aims to raise awareness for a specific intellectual disability. Culminating the week the Unified Tornadoes helped the students in Mrs. Hoy's Rise Classroom with their class business called Brewin Up a Storm. They helped the students make the drinks that were ordered and then helped them deliver them to the teachers. After delivering the drinks they went to PE with them. The students love when they come into their room.

In this week's fifth grade SEL lesson with Ms. Whitehead, students learn about Nelson Mandela's life and the hardships he went through. Mandela stated if he didn't forgive, he would continue to be in prison even after he was released by carrying anger and bitterness with him. Students are making ""forgiveness slime"" this week. Writing on the slime symbolizes hurt, grudges, and negative emotions. When we knead and mix the slime it erases the writing. This symbolizes the power of forgiveness.

In celebration of Valentine’s Day, Ms. Donovan’s class participated in a kindness chain activity. Each student wrote heartfelt compliments on strips of paper for classmates, which were then given to them. The exercise was a wonderful reminder of the impact of thoughtful words. The compliments students came up with were truly thoughtful and uplifting!

In 2nd grade, we’ve been exploring the exciting world of 2D and 3D shapes! The students have loved engaging in hands-on activities to bring these shapes to life in creative ways. To deepen their understanding, they designed their own dice with different shapes on each side and rolled them to generate new polygons. They also built 3D shapes using toothpicks and marshmallows, reinforcing their knowledge of edges, vertices, and faces. To top it off, they experimented with playdough, transforming their flat 2D shapes into dynamic 3D creations. It’s been a fun and interactive way to learn about geometry!
